anti-racist Books For Kids:
A School Library Audit

I recently was working on re-opening our school library, since during Covid it became a bit of a store room! As part of this, I created a book list for our Parent Council to run a book drive with parents, with the aim of diversifying our library content.

At the same time, my pupils help me have a ruthless book clearout. We found books filled with harmful stereotypes - even one book all about golliwogs! My class were engaged in discussion about what made a book 'harmful or wonderful' and we cleared lots of space for the new books.

If you haven't done an audit of your school library yet, I would highly recommend. Are the books already there perpetuating outdated stereotypes (or are sometimes just downright racist)? Are there enough books to ensure books see themselves reflected?
